Art Quote of the Day for August 30, 2009

I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on. - Mark Rothco

Art Quote of the Day for August 29, 2009

A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing. - William Dobell

Art Quote for August 27, 2009

Art is a kind of innate drive that seizes a human being and makes him its instrument. To perform this difficult office it is sometimes necessary for him to sacrifice happiness and everything that makes life worth living for the ordinary human being. - Carl Jung, famous psychiatrist (1875-1961)

Art Quote for August 26, 2009

A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist. -Louis Nizer, American lawyer (1902-1994)

Art Quote for August 25, 2009

I find working with glass meditative, almost therapeutic. I can leave the world behind, and focus... The simplicity of form, the drama of rich, intense colour, the joy of challenge, and the challenge of endurance... The piece, when it is over, is not what is made, but how it is made. -Andrew Kunitz

Musings on Design

I came across an intriguing quote about Design this morning while I was visiting the website of E Studio Design Consultants (www.estudioinc-usa.com/), who are one of my contacts on LinkedIn. It made think about the inherent complexity of items involved in Design and how each choice we make matters and shapes not only the final product but everything around it.

While the dictionary defines the noun design as meaning:
-a mental project or scheme in which means to an end are laid down
-a preliminary sketch or outline showing the main features of something to be executed (ex: the design for the new stadium)
-an underlying scheme that governs functioning, developing, or unfolding
-a plan or protocol for carrying out or accomplishing something (as a scientific experiment)
-the arrangement of elements or details in a product or work of art
-the creative art of executing aesthetic or functional designs

I think the following quote from Erik Adigard explains it far better:
"Design is everything we make but it is also between those things. It's a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy."

Here are some other quotes about Design that I think you might enjoy:
-"Design is the human power to conceive, plan, and realize products that serve human beings in the accomplishment of any individual or collective purpose." (Dick Buchanan)
-"Design is making things right." (Ralph Kaplan)
-"Design is the glimmer in God's eye." (Anonymous)
